Aidan Baker & Gareth Davis – Invisible Cities II [Karlrecords]
Canadian guitarist Aidan Baker and Belgian clarinetist Gareth Davis form a rather original and unique musical duo, they combine both instruments, in Davis’s case the bass clarinet, to create atmospheres and explore a quieter and more peaceful musical sense that mixes jazz and ambient or drone.
Both have been previously involved in different projects. In Baker’s case, he has released several solo albums, he is also one of the components of Nadja, a duo with a style that ranges from drone to postmetal, and in addition, since 2012 he is part of B/B/S, an experimental improvisation trio that he shares with Andrea Belfi and Erik Skodin. As for Davis, he is an artist who masters a wide range of styles, from postrock to more experimental genres.
Invisible Cities was the debut of this couple of artists. This release was published in January 2018 on the Berlin-based Karlrecords label and featured 4 tracks with a reflective atmosphere, with long spaces for instruments and individual sounds, and in some parts even introduced field recordings. Now, two years later, they are back with a second chapter of Invisible Cities and with the same meditative atmosphere they left us with the first part.
Release date: January 24th, 2020.
