Compactor – United [Love Earth Music]
Industrial music can be defined in many ways, depending always on the context in which the style develops, however, the true roots of industrial music come directly from the mechanised sound of industry. Therefore, nothing describes industrial sound better than all those textures and patterns created from ornamental instruments and systems. This musical philosophy represents, in addition to a creative ingenuity based on precarity and reconditioning, the working and labouring class and to the toil of the worker.
With just over a decade of activity, Compactor represents the emptiness of the worker. As described by the artist himself, Compactor is an interconnected set of mostly obsolete machinery manipulated by an anonymous, representative figure known as The Worker, who is forced to work for a faceless corporation. The Worker never speaks, always masked and in a generic uniform, to emphasise the dehumanisation.
United is an album aimed at the labour movement. Each fragment describes and quotes different slogans and labour issues, and the sound and style of each of these tracks perfectly exemplifies the soundtrack that many workers are exposed to in the workplace. Compactor channels all the sounds to create an acoustic that emanates from the guts of its mechanisms, with harsh atmospheres that feed on thumps and cutting brass.
