Costume – Sweet And Nice Nightmares

MauSS’ mutant project Costume has always been an unpredictable entity, totally informed by the whims and changing desires of its creator. House music, retro Italian pop, new wave, punk, trance, techno, noise, are just some of the genres touched by the Independent outfit – often in the same album.

So, it’s no surprise that just after two months from the previous old-school house themed EP High House Party, Costume returns with a 10-track album called Sweet And Nice Nightmares. Once again, the output is quite different and based on another kind of atmosphere and delivery.

This time, traditional dance structures are perverted and mutated by experimental elements and sharp noise takes, creating an acidic and nervous undercurrent that links together the different tracks. The resulting sound has its own dimension, far from both the mainstream dance scene and the current alternative techno style.

The album starts with the cinematic #1, a slow and churning march where strong industrial-tinged kicks are underlined by melancholy synth sounds and cosmic atmospheres, while #2 offers shriling effects and obsessive claps with imperfect rhythmic pattens that collapse against cut-and-paste loops coming from retro-dance sounds. The result is strange and alien, and for sure not aimed to the dancefloor.

#4 is an exercise in abrasive distortion and rhythmic compulsion, a modern interpretation of old-school house ethos with a very lysergic and chaotic spirit, while #6 works within the same frame, but using instead minimal elements and warehouse techno sounds in a metallic experience with a rusty theme. #7 is somewhat closer to proper classic house music, but even there we can find shriling distortions and ominous atmospheres, and the last part offers krautrock cosmic vibes.

#8 is an atmospheric 90’s trance pastiche with oneiric jungle passages and Epic keys, while #9 employs broken rhythms and melodic loops in an urban affair with a strong Sheffield-sound feeling. The last track #10 chooses to seduce the listener with highly captivating keys and slow-paced rhythms informed by 70’s ambient and 90’s trance, before delving deeper into snaredrums and cymbals in its finale.

Sweet And Nice Nightmares is probably the most cohesive Costume’s work to date, while retaining the experimental nature of the project and MauSS’ taste for aural cross-pollination. Closer in spirit to Cabaret Voltaire or Psychic TV than any current alternative-electronic music act, he starts from classic dance elements and then transforms them by chopping, distorting, fusing whatever he wants. The true definition of an Independent, underground project which follows only its own rules in its own game.

El proyecto mutante MauSS de Costume siempre ha sido una entidad impredecible, moldeada por los caprichos y los deseos cambiantes de su creador. House, pop retro italiano, new wave, punk, trance, techno, noise… son solo algunos de los géneros que aborda este proyecto independiente, y a menudo en un mismo álbum.

Así que no sorprende que, apenas dos meses después de su EP High House Party (de corte old-school house), Costume regrese con Sweet And Nice Nightmares, un álbum de 10 pistas. Una vez más, el resultado es distinto y se basa en una atmósfera y planteamiento completamente nuevos.

Esta vez, las estructuras tradicionales del dance son pervertidas y mutadas por elementos experimentales y cortes afilados de noise, creando una corriente underground ácida y nerviosa que une las pistas. El sonido resultante habita en su propia dimensión, lejos tanto del mainstream dance como del techno alternativo actual.

El álbum abre con #1, una marcha lenta y turbia donde kicks industriales se mezclan con sintetizadores melancólicos y atmósferas cósmicas. #2 ofrece efectos estridentes y palmas obsesivas con patrones rítmicos imperfectos que colapsan contra loops de corta y pega de sonidos retro-dance. El resultado es extraño y alienígena, lejos de cualquier pista de baile.

En #4, la distorsión abrasiva y la compulsión rítmica reinterpretan el ethos old-school house con un espíritu lisérgico y caótico. #6 trabaja en la misma línea, pero con elementos mínimos y sonidos de warehouse techno que evocan una experiencia metálica y oxidada. #7 se acerca algo más al house clásico, pero incluso aquí hay distorsiones chirriantes y atmósferas ominosas, con un final que desprende vibraciones cósmicas al estilo krautrock.

#8 es un remake de trance de los 90 con pasajes oníricos de jungle y teclados épicos, mientras que #9 emplea ritmos rotos y loops melódicos en una propuesta urbana con claros ecos del sonido de Sheffield. El cierre, #10, seduce con teclados hipnóticos y ritmos pausados inspirados en el ambient de los 70 y el trance de los 90, antes de sumergirse en redoblantes y platillos en su final.

Sweet And Nice Nightmares es quizá el trabajo más cohesivo de Costume hasta la fecha, sin perder su naturaleza experimental ni el gusto de MauSS por la polinización cruzada de sonidos. Más cercano en espíritu a Cabaret Voltaire o Psychic TV que a cualquier proyecto de electrónica alternativa actual, el artista parte de elementos clásicos del dance y los transforma cortando, distorsionando y fusionando a su antojo. La definición misma de un proyecto independiente y underground que solo sigue sus propias reglas.
