Dode – Music for critters [Oigovisiones Label]
Spanish label Oigovisiones opens 2023 with an album by pianist and improviser Carmen Morales aka Dode, a release produced by the artist herself and recorded live at the stunning Bodega Descalzos Viejos in the Andalusian town of Ronda. Undoubtedly, the choice of this location has determined the final sound of this work, the eleven tracks of Music for Critters are pure spontaneous goldsmithery with Dode displaying minimalist resonances and electronic subtlety.
Music for Critters is a fragmented, shared and blurred narrative-musical artistic gesture. Contemporary to its present, the underlying concept that acts as a link between all the parts of this project (pre-concept, recording, post-production, mastering, art, layout, etc.) is a double reconfiguration: an artistic background that has not yet died and a new way of making music that has not yet been born.
Listening to this project, one senses that there is something similar to previous structured constructions that are constantly falling apart. It is difficult to anticipate and find oneself. It is an escape from style, from classification, from structure, from the expected, from that identifiable and comfortable aesthetic experience. It is a music eroded by the penetration of thousands of uncontrollable and difficult to identify external inputs, and that is why improvisation has been the most transparent way to achieve this end. It is not necessary to understand everything, in this project we find sounds that propose a metaphorical world amalgamated by sonic affinities and misunderstandings.
Release date: January 16th, 2023.
