Metroland – Activity EP [Alfa Matrix]

Following the success of their album Forum, the Belgian duo Metroland returns with Activity, an EP that reaffirms their sonic identity and conceptual approach to electronic music. This release, the third single from Forum, not only refines their characteristic sound but also introduces a fascinating narrative about immediacy in the modern world, particularly in banking and business.

The EP is built around three tracks that explore the concept of real-time notifications. Activity as a Short Timetrigger is a direct and compact piece of just over two minutes, with a radio-friendly approach that condenses its essence into an immediate and precise format. On the other hand, Activity as a Long Timetrigger unfolds with a more extended cadence, exceeding six minutes with a hypnotic rhythmic base and influences from 80s synth-pop. Both versions refine the original structure, highlighting the signature sequenced bass lines and atmospheric textures that define Metroland’s sound.

El EP se construye en torno a tres temas que abordan la idea de las notificaciones en tiempo real. Activity as a Short Timetrigger es una pieza directa y compacta de poco más de dos minutos, con un enfoque radio-friendly que condensa su esencia en un formato inmediato y preciso. Por otro lado, Activity as a Long Timetrigger se despliega con una cadencia más extensa, superando los seis minutos con una base rítmica hipnótica e influencias del synth-pop ochentero. Ambas versiones presentan refinamientos en la estructura original, destacando los característicos bajos secuenciados y las texturas atmosféricas que han definido el sonido de Metroland.

However, the EP’s biggest conceptual shift comes with Conference of the Parties, a track that moves away from the pragmatic tone of the rest of the work to delve into environmental reflection. Somewhere between experimentation and electronic ambient, this piece immerses the listener in an enveloping atmosphere with a slow development, creating a striking contrast with the rhythmic urgency of the two main tracks.

Pero el mayor giro conceptual del EP llega con Conference of the Parties, un tema que se aleja del tono pragmático del resto del trabajo para adentrarse en la reflexión ambiental. A medio camino entre la experimentación y el ambient electrónico, esta pieza envuelve al oyente en una atmósfera envolvente y de desarrollo pausado, marcando un contraste significativo con la urgencia rítmica de las dos pistas principales.

With Activity, Metroland once again demonstrates their mastery in crafting electronic music with a strong thematic component.
