Ens Imperfectissimum & Vrna – Necrognosis And Secret Rituals On the Edge Of The Abyss [Noctivagant]

Vrna and Ens Imperfectissimum are two important names in Italian ritual/dark ambient underground. The first is the brainchild of Gianluca Martucci, involved in Il Prato Dei Desideri and Sagenhaft too, the second is the project of an anonymous member of Occult Odyssey. Their sound is ominous, evocative and highly informed by occult practices and concepts coming from magick – so, not just music with a pure entertaining value.

Necrognosis And Secret Rituals On the Edge Of The Abyss is the name of the 2-track split that sees the two realities collaborating in a 60 minutes and 13 seconds journey through chthonic worlds and spectral dimensions. Both tracks employ fields recordings and sounds recorded in cemeteries, as well as funeral bells, death whistles (Ehecachichtli) and bones. For the occasion, Ecuadorian act Venus Oculta helps Ens Imperfectissimum with its side of the work.

Ceremonies In the Cemetery Under The Blood Moon sees the two aforementioned acts conjuring a macabre ritual informed by psychophonies and funereal soundscapes. Starting with eerie field-recordings and layers of droning motifs, it grows into shrilling effects and hidden, dark tension. A nocturnal, sharp «orchestration of machines» is conjured, testing the unaware listener and promising a sonic ritual not for the casual user. Spectral samples move underneath the main structure, and distant, ominous chants appear and disappear suddenly. The chaotic, yet restrained, nature of the track gives us a no- time and no-space dimension suspended in the ether, a ceremony of tormented entities and alarmed parts of nature rebelling against something that is «other». The long episode collapses into deep industrial mantras intermixed with dark ambient soundscapes, offering a death-industrial experience dominated by dissonance.

Vrna offers Incubazione Rituale Al Cimitero Delle Fontanelle, recorded in Naples at the highly suggestive location of Cimitero Delle Fontanelle (The Fontanelle Cemetery), an ancient ossuary full of legends and mysteries. Here a subdued start sees a whispered voice full of reverb, chanting mysterious words while malevolent sounds grow in the background. An obsessive mantra is established, underlined by solemn, cerimonial, chants, but sudden stops punctuate what now is configured as a grim mass not for the living. Celestial voices and dark ones become one, before a funeral bell announces a return to crawling gloom; then, shrilling cries violate the soundscape giving space to hellish samples. There is no comfort for us, even when the main chants return: this is another ritual made of difficult challanges and abrasive distortion. Grinding, mechanical sounds establish a droning factory of death, in a crescendo doomed to collide with the dark ambient finale that guides us toward oblivion.

It’s clear that this split is not a disposable product aimed at simple consumption and entertainment. The circumstances and surroundings of its creation, as well as the craft and tools involved, have a clear ritualistic meaning. Now, one doesn’t have to believe to certain occult aspects in order to appreciate a work of art – but respect and understanding for the meaning, dedication behind the work, and the scope of it, are required if one wants to fully experience the artistic vision behind this release.

Vrna y Ens Imperfectissimum son dos nombres importantes dentro del underground italiano del ritual/dark ambient. El primero es el proyecto de Gianluca Martucci, también involucrado en Il Prato Dei Desideri y Sagenhaft, mientras que el segundo es la creación de un miembro anónimo de Occult Odyssey. Su sonido es ominoso, evocador y profundamente influenciado por prácticas ocultas y conceptos provenientes de la magia, lo que lo aleja de ser música con un mero valor de entretenimiento.

Necrognosis And Secret Rituals On the Edge Of The Abyss es el nombre del split de dos pistas que reúne a estos dos proyectos en un viaje de 60 minutos y 13 segundos a través de mundos ctónicos y dimensiones espectrales. Ambas canciones emplean grabaciones de campo y sonidos registrados en cementerios, así como campanas fúnebres, silbatos de la muerte (Ehecachichtli) y huesos. Para esta ocasión, el proyecto ecuatoriano Venus Oculta colabora con Ens Imperfectissimum en su parte de la obra.

Ceremonies In the Cemetery Under The Blood Moon muestra a los dos proyectos conjurando un ritual macabro basado en psicofonías y paisajes sonoros fúnebres. Comienza con inquietantes grabaciones de campo y capas de motivos ambient, que evolucionan hacia efectos estridentes y una tensión oscura y velada. Se invoca una «orquestación de máquinas» nocturna y afilada, poniendo a prueba al oyente desprevenido y prometiendo un ritual sonoro no apto para el consumo casual. Muestras espectrales se mueven bajo la estructura principal, mientras cantos ominosos y distantes aparecen y desaparecen de repente. La naturaleza caótica, pero contenida, del tema nos sumerge en una dimensión sin tiempo ni espacio, suspendida en el éter: una ceremonia de entidades atormentadas y partes rebeldes de la naturaleza que se alzan contra algo «ajeno». El largo episodio colapsa en mantras industriales profundos entremezclados con paisajes de dark ambient, ofreciendo una experiencia de death-industrial dominada por la disonancia.

Por su parte, Vrna presenta Incubazione Rituale Al Cimitero Delle Fontanelle, grabada en Nápoles en el fascinante Cimitero delle Fontanelle, un antiguo osario lleno de leyendas y misterios. Aquí, un inicio contenido presenta una voz susurrante cargada de reverberación, recitando palabras misteriosas mientras sonidos malevolentes crecen en el fondo. Se establece un mantra obsesivo, subrayado por cantos solemnes y ceremoniales, aunque paradas repentinas interrumpen lo que ahora se configura como una misa lúgubre, no destinada a los vivos. Voces celestiales y oscuras se funden, hasta que una campana fúnebre anuncia un regreso a la penumbra arrastrada. Entonces, gritos desgarradores violan el paisaje sonoro, dando paso a muestras infernales. No hay consuelo para el oyente, ni siquiera cuando los cantos principales retornan: este es otro ritual compuesto de desafíos difíciles y distorsión abrasiva. Sonidos mecánicos y chirriantes establecen una fábrica ambiental de muerte, en un crescendo condenado a colisionar con el final dark ambient que nos guía hacia el olvido.

Está claro que este split no es un producto desechable destinado al consumo simple o al entretenimiento. Las circunstancias y el entorno de su creación, así como las técnicas y herramientas empleadas, tienen un significado ritualístico evidente. No es necesario creer en ciertos aspectos ocultos para apreciar una obra de arte, pero el respeto y la comprensión por su significado, la dedicación detrás de ella y su propósito son indispensables para experimentar plenamente la visión artística que impulsa este lanzamiento.
