The Below – Immutable Behaviour

The Swedish industrial post-punk group The Below releases Immutable Behaviour as a vinyl LP, combining their two acclaimed 2024 EPs (Immutable Decay and Behaviour in Public Places). With this album, The Below offers an immersive journey into their sonic world, drawing on influences from industrial, post-punk, experimental, electronic, and noise rock. Both EPs were created using a mix of raw industrial sounds such as scrap metal, found objects, and power tools, woven into distortion-driven soundscapes. While sharing a similar foundation, the two EPs explore distinct creative territories.

El grupo sueco de post-punk industrial The Below lanza Immutable Behaviour como un LP de vinilo que combina sus dos aclamados EPs de 2024 (Immutable Decay y Behaviour in Public Places). Con este álbum, The Below ofrece un viaje inmersivo a su mundo sonoro, que se nutre de influencias del industrial, post-punk, experimental, electrónica y noise rock. Ambos EPs fueron creados utilizando una mezcla de sonidos industriales crudos como chatarra, objetos encontrados y herramientas eléctricas, entrelazados en paisajes sonoros impulsados por la distorsión. Immutable Decay, featuring vocalist Aaron Sutcliffe, delivers a raw and politically charged message. “90 Seconds to Midnight,” with its intense percussion and relentless energy, highlights themes of corruption and environmental degradation, painting a grim portrait of humanity on the brink. Meanwhile, “Artificial Lights (Dystopian Haze)” captures the heartbreaking reality of living in air-raid shelters during the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Driven by scrapyard percussion and Sutcliffe’s emotional delivery, the track offers a powerful reflection on the human cost of war.

Behaviour in Public Places, with vocals by Jesper Hanning, delves into the darker corners of the human psyche. The track “Heebie-Jeebies Süssigkeit” examines the hidden facets of human nature, juxtaposing unsettling harmonies with harsh industrial textures. Hanning’s performance uses the chilling example of John Wayne Gacy to highlight the extremes of hidden darkness. “Hitobito (Only the Shadows)” reflects on the devastating bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, where the shadows of victims were permanently etched into stone. The song contrasts the slow, searing intensity of industrial sounds with a delicate melodic thread, giving it a haunting and contemplative character.

Meanwhile, Immutable Decay closes with the haunting gem “Immutable Decay (Outro),” a track that reflects on humanity’s failure to learn from history, trapped in an endless cycle of repeating the same mistakes. Together, these songs showcase the depth and thematic resonance that define The Below’s work.

En Behaviour in Public Places, el tema de apertura “Tabla Motors” explora el envejecimiento y la mortalidad, reforzando el tono introspectivo y provocador del EP. Coinciding with the album release, a surreal and unsettling animated video for the darkest song on Behaviour in Public Places, “Hitobito (Only the Shadows),” premieres. Created by Daniele Arcuri, known for his collaborations with Vince Clarke and Pixelgrinder, this eighth and final video of the album’s visual series offers a disturbing interpretation of the song’s themes.
