Cyrnai is the alias of Carolyn Fok, an Asian-American pioneer of experimental electronic music. She began in 1981 using her father’s tape recorder and homemade instruments, quickly drawing inspiration from the industrial sounds of bands like Cabaret Voltaire. In the 1980s, she released several records as Cyrnai and performed with bands such as Trial and Rhythm & Noise. Throughout her career, she has collaborated with figures like Elliot Sharp, Tim Story, and Grammy-nominated guitarist Joaquin Lievano. Her recent work includes the albums Spacetime Canvas I & II (a duo project with scientist Steve Bryson) and the reissue of her early material on Cyrnai 1980-90 (2018, Dark Entries).

Her music—described as immersive and cinematic—explores identity, emotion, and transformation, blending driving rhythms with delicate textures. The album incorporates radio signals, static, and spectral voices, featuring spatial sound design optimized for headphones. The cover art, depicting a female statue in an attic, hints at the rediscovery of her Cyrnai alter ego, reinforcing themes of duality and memory.
