Sacred Skin – Born In Fire [Artoffact Records]

Hailing from Los Angeles, Sacred Skin are a relatively new duo well versed in nostalgic, 80’s inspired, synth/new wave music. Brian DaMert and Brian Tarney started the project as Second Skin in 2021, but after some digital single they changed its name. Under this new moniker, they released the debut The Decline Of Pleasure – a pastiche of new wave, synth-wave, italo disco and sparse hints of post-punk, a work which evoked vividly cinematic pop from the 80’s, while at the same time firmly set in the current revision/reinterpretation of that decade by modern alternative music.

Provenientes de Los Ángeles, Sacred Skin es un dúo relativamente nuevo, con un estilo orientado a la música synth/new wave inspirada en los años 80 cargada de nostalgia. Brian DaMert y Brian Tarney iniciaron el proyecto como Second Skin en 2021, pero tras algunos sencillos digitales, cambiaron su nombre. Bajo esta nueva identidad, lanzaron su debut The Decline of Pleasure – una mezcolanza de new wave, synth-wave, italo disco y sutiles guiños al post-punk, una obra que evoca vívidamente el pop cinematográfico de los 80, al mismo tiempo que se enmarca en la revisión/reinterpretación actual de esa década por parte de la música alternativa moderna.

The sophomore release Born In Fire is a logical continuation of that spirit, with an overall more refined and stronger sound and songwriting. We find here unapologetic choruses, melodies, shouts, refrains and ear-worms underlined by the same atmosphere we could find in an 80’s b-movie full of romance, action, and post-apocalyptic scenarios.

Su segundo álbum, Born In Fire, es una continuación lógica de ese espíritu, con un sonido y composición más refinados y potentes. Aquí encontramos coros descarados, melodías, gritos y estribillos que perfectamente podríamos hallar en una película clase B de los 80, repleta de romance, acción y escenarios postapocalípticos.

Waiting starts the album on the right foot, a gracious synth-pop track with eerie guitars and steady electronic rhythms, completed by soulful vocal deliveries and enchanting keys. Well placed emotional crescendos and sudden filtered parts play with our expectation and prepare us for the final climax. Show Your Love is a sensual new wave episode with apt bass-lines, funk guitars and even some interesting use of distortion, without detracting from the pop core of the song. Call It Off welcomes a duet between male and female vocals, underlined by classy disco moments and uplifting melody.

Waiting inicia el álbum con el pie derecho, una elegante canción de synth-pop con guitarras inquietantes y ritmos electrónicos constantes, complementada por vocales emotivas y teclados envolventes. Crescendos emocionales bien colocados y partes filtradas repentinas juegan con nuestras expectativas y nos preparan para el clímax final. Show Your Love es un episodio sensual de new wave con líneas de bajo precisas, guitarras funk e incluso un uso interesante de distorsión, sin restar fuerza al núcleo pop de la canción. Call It Off presenta un dúo entre voces masculina y femenina, respaldado por momentos por una melodía inspiradora.

Too Hard To Find showcases early 80’s new romantic tendencies mixed with more robust post-punk elements and the usual full-out choruses – maximalism is the name of the game with Sacred Skin. Paranoid injects darkwave ethos into their formula, without altering the aesthetics of the duo, always possessed by a strong taste for melody and hypnotizing refrains. A strong moment for the album showcasing an interesting side of the project and their willingness to experiment.

Too Hard To Find muestra tendencias new romantic de principios de los 80 mezcladas con elementos post-punk más robustos y los habituales coros exuberantes – el maximalismo es el seña de identidad de Sacred Skin -. Paranoid inyecta esencia darkwave en su fórmula, sin alterar la estética del dúo, siempre poseído por un fuerte gusto por la melodía y por los estribillos hipnóticos. Un momento destacado del álbum en el que muestra la faceta experimental del proyecto.

About the remixes we find at the end of the album, the most accomplished one is probably Dancing Plague rendition of Call It Off as a rhythmic affair with strong kicks, sharp bass-lines, and a harder vibe that serves well the robotic structure of this version.

Entre los remixes incluidos al final del álbum, el más logrado es probablemente la versión de Dancing Plague para Call It Off, una reinterpretación rítmica con kicks contundentes, bajos afilados y una vibración más dura que encaja bien con la estructura robótica de esta versión.

Born In Fire doesn’t change the direction of Sacred Skin, instead it affirms it loudly and proudly, with even more conviction and strong self-coincidence. When walking the path of “music inspired by the idea of 80’s music, even more than actual 80’s music” the difference between unintended parody and sincere devotion to the genre can be very thin. Luckily, Sacred Skin are totally at ease in mixing styles, and moods, that hardly would have been coexisting in the same album (or band) at the time. They believe in what they do, and have the tools and skills to deliver the kind of sound and image they envision about their music. So, if you are interested in this kind of music, Born In Fire is the best album of the band and one that deserves to be further investigated.

Born In Fire no cambia la dirección de Sacred Skin, sino que la reafirma con orgullo y convicción, con aún más seguridad en sí mismos. Al transitar entre el camino de «música inspirada en la idea de la música de los 80, más que en la música real de esa década”, la línea entre la parodia involuntaria y la devoción al género puede ser muy delgada. Afortunadamente, Sacred Skin se desenvuelve con naturalidad mezclando estilos y atmósferas que difícilmente habrían coexistido en un mismo álbum (o banda) en aquella época. Creen en lo que hacen y tienen las herramientas para plasmar el sonido e imagen que conciben para su música. Así que, si te interesa este tipo de música, Born In Fire es el mejor álbum de la banda y uno que merece ser investigado más a fondo.
