Originally known as The Funeral March of the Marionettes, though often shortened to The Funeral March, the band emerged in 1987 as a homage to the British pioneers who shaped their aesthetic: Bowie’s theatricality, The Cure’s gloomy romanticism, Siouxsie and the Banshees’ fury, Bauhaus’ rawness, and Joy Division’s existential anguish. Their name, a nod to Charles Gounod’s haunting Funeral March of a Marionette (famously used to open Alfred Hitchcock Presents), foreshadowed their destiny: music that tread the line between the lyrical and the macabre.

Between 1987 and the mid-90s, the band left its mark on underground stages before fading into prolonged silence. Brief resurgences in the 2000s kept the flame alive, but it wasn’t until 2017, on their 30th anniversary, that Joe Whiteaker revived the project with renewed energy. The comeback couldn’t have been more symbolic: The Raven EP (2017), a collection of lost recordings from their early years, remastered to bridge past and present. From then on, with a fluid lineup yet unwavering in essence, the band unleashed a creative wave with EPs like Resurgence (2018), Solace (2020), Flood (2021), and the acclaimed Persephone (2023), where jagged guitars, ghostly synths, and lyrics weaving myth with intimate confession collided.
