Galya Bisengalieva – Polygon Reflections [One Little Independent]

Galya Bisengalieva is a Kazakh composer, producer and violinist whose work transcends genre. Known for her striking originality and virtuosic command of her instrument, she occupies a singular space in music. Her first two releases, EP ONE and TWO, were issued on NOMAD Music Productions, the label she founded to champion experimental sounds.

Galya Bisengalieva revealed Polygon for One Little Independent in the dark autumn of 2023. Now as summer turns to autumn 2025, Bisengalieva presents Polygon Reflections a collaborative reimagining of the original with artists; The Bug, Hatis Noit, KMRU, Balkhash Dreaming, Lucy Liyou, Aïsha Devi, Hinako Omori and Alva Noto. The release date is the anniversary of the first Soviet nuclear weapon test in Kazakhstan.

Like Galya’s 2020 debut album Aralkum she returned to themes from her home country of Kazakhstan for its sequel. While Aralkum was about the shrinking of the Aral Sea, Polygon was a tone poem about one of the darkest episodes in Kazakh history; the Semipalatinsk Test Site located on the steppe in north east Kazakhstan (known as The Polygon). It was the Soviet Union’s primary testing zone for nuclear weapons and they conducted 456 nuclear tests there from 1949 to 1989, creating more nuclear fallout than Chernobyl.

Each track on the LP was after features within The Polygon; villages, towns, natural features and other landmarks. To Soviet leaders it was «uninhabited» but in fact the steppe was the crucible of Kazakh culture, home to poets, musicians and the country’s most famous literary figure Abai Quananbaiuly, as well as an extraordinary ecology of mountains, hills and pine forests running along the river Irtysh.

Bisengalieva has turned her work over to a consortium of her closest contemporaries, to ask for their reflections. The collaborative album reads even closer to a soundtrack with unique scenes, from The Bug’s ferocious mechanical machinations, to Hatis Noit’s incantations, KMRU’s multi-textured digital vistas, Lucy Liyou electro-acoustic piano study, Aïsha Devi’s dissociated cyber-electronica, Hinako Omori’s arpeggiated mediations, Balkhash Dreaming’s poetry intertwined with sampling archival recording from the 1930s, performed by Amre Kashaubayev, a musician who lived in the Semipalatinsk region (1888-1934) to Alva Noto microsampled click soundworld meeting Galya’s multifaceted compositions.

Conocida por su sorprendente originalidad y su dominio virtuoso del violín, ocupa un espacio único en la música. Sus dos primeros lanzamientos, los EP ONE y TWO, fueron publicados bajo NOMAD Music Productions, el sello que fundó para promover sonidos experimentales.

Galya Bisengalieva presentó Polygon con One Little Independent en el otoño oscuro de 2023. Ahora, en 2025, Bisengalieva presenta Polygon Reflections, una reinterpretación colaborativa del original junto a artistas como The Bug, Hatis Noit, KMRU, Balkhash Dreaming, Lucy Liyou, Aïsha Devi, Hinako Omori y Alva Noto. La fecha de lanzamiento coincide con el aniversario de la primera prueba nuclear soviética en Kazajistán.

Al igual que en su álbum debut Aralkum (2020), Galya regresó a temas de su país natal para esta secuela. Si Aralkum exploraba la desecación del mar de Aral, Polygon fue un poema tonal sobre uno de los episodios más sombríos de la historia kazaja: el Polígono de Semipalátinsk, ubicado en la estepa del noreste del país. Fue la principal zona de pruebas nucleares de la URSS, donde realizaron 456 ensayos atómicos entre 1949 y 1989, generando más contaminación radiactiva que Chernóbil.

Cada tema del LP aludía a lugares dentro del Polígono: aldeas, pueblos, accidentes geográficos y otros hitos. Para los líderes soviéticos era un territorio «deshabitado», pero en realidad la estepa era el crisol de la cultura kazaja, hogar de poetas, músicos y figuras literarias como Abai Quananbaiuly, además de una ecología única de montañas, colinas y bosques de pinos junto al río Irtish.

En Polygon Reflections, Bisengalieva ha entregado su obra a un consorcio de artistas contemporáneos para plasmar sus reflexiones. El álbum colaborativo se acerca aún más a una banda sonora con escenas únicas: desde las feroces maquinaciones mecánicas de The Bug, las invocaciones etéreas de Hatis Noit, los paisajes digitales multitexturados de KMRU, el estudio electroacústico de piano de Lucy Liyou, la electrónica disociada de Aïsha Devi, las meditaciones arpegiadas de Hinako Omori, hasta la poesía de Balkhash Dreaming entrelazada con grabaciones de archivo de los años 30 del músico Amre Kashaubayev (quien vivió en la región de Semipalátinsk, 1888-1934), y el universo de clicks microsampleados de Alva Noto fusionándose con las composiciones multifacéticas de Galya.
