Rapoon – Fallen Gods [Abstrakce Records]
Abstrakce Records re-releases the third album by the veteran Rapoon, the alias embodied by Robin Storey, who was one of the members of the pioneering band in experimental and industrial music Zoviet France. Fallen Gods was originally released in 1994 on the multidisciplinary platform Staalplaat and is now reissued again by the Valencian label, this time as a double vinyl.
Fallen Gods is a fantastic sound document that shows the primary stage of this British artist. Taking into account his two previous albums, released in 1992 (Dream Circle) and 1993 (Raising Earthly Spirits), this is the work that consolidated Rapoon’s style, with a methodology based on organic textures, generally coming from tribal instruments and chants, and a mixture of esoteric and shamanic atmospheres.
The tribalism in Rapoon’s compositions does not only come from percussive elements, he also adds some string and wind instruments typical of oriental regions. However, Storey masterfully combines all this organic orchestration with all kinds of synthetic textures. His music is nourished by sounds collected from various parts of the world, which he then treats in his studio and adapts as he wishes. The rhythmic structure, linked to Indian or African ethnicities, is always immersed in a hypnotic context, with a series of cycles that feedback each other until they influence the listener’s mind.
Release date: December 7th, 2021.
