God Body Disconnect – Lost Within Loss [Cryo Chamber]

God Body Disconnect is the solo project of American musician Bruce Moallem, previously member of the death metal band Cadaverment, the legendary slam outfit Dripping, and part of dark ambient projects like Reflecting Identities and Underwater Sleep Orchestra. Under this moniker, he has released 11 albums so far, all for Simon Health’s (Atrium Carceri) label Cryo Chamber.

The sound of this project is highly cinematic, exploring dark themes and atmospheres via both drones, layers of sound, and post-rock guitars. The result is an evocative experience, enhanced by the narrative use of some spoken parts.

Lost Within Loss is the 11th album of God Body Disconnect, a work deeply informed by the concept of loss and regret, and by the idea of searching for solace in sleep and dreams, where we can find again what has gone away in real life.

In order to give form to this, he employs a vintage setting, using three cassette recorders from the ’80s and ’90s, and a VCR. This way, he fuses warm sounds and melancholy, in a sonic world in which sadness and the search for relief coexist in a paradox.

The Life I Took For Granted starts the album with its eerie atmosphere and melancholic piano notes, conjuring a bittersweet soundscape intermixed with vibrant sounds and samples from everyday life and movies. The result is a narrative experience, that continues with Departed Moments Of Home, a soothing piece made of celestial drones and the sound of rain; a looping motive guides us among an inner world informed by memory and emotions.

The Angel With Charred Wings gives us a cinematic template characterized by a slow crescendo, a layer of sounds that stay distant and remote like ghost-memories and echoes. Once again sombre atmospheres and oneiric melodies become one, in the music, as well as in the listener’s mind. A Life Time Of Letters Lost is a crawling motif that employs obsessive notes and ominous sounds, in order to achieve a communion of different feelings, fused together in a single entity.

Would It Have Mattered is a plumbeous episode that plays with minimal soundscapes and placid takes on ambient music, a short pastiche underlined by eerie voices that moves behind the main musical theme, and the last track Destined To Disappear ends our journey with celestial drones and sad orchestrations that perfectly convoy a sense of loss and grief, offering a thematic climax in line with the whole work.

Lost Within Loss is a very personal work, yet graced by the gift of being understandable, thanks to its human and realistic themes. The listener will find himself in a hazy, dreamy world full of nostalgic vibes and bittersweet melodies, made of minimal, sparse elements and droning motifs with evocative and narrative qualities. The artist doesn’t want to scare or upset the listener, he wants to open himself and show its inner sorrow, and memories, through the evocation of personal sensations, regrets, feelings. The result is not overwhelming or suffocating, the album puts us in the place of the author, and we experience what he has lost, knowing it will never return, or better said, the ghost-memories of what he has lost, tinged with nostalgia.

God Body Disconnect es el proyecto en solitario del músico estadounidense Bruce Moallem, antiguo miembro de la banda de death metal Cadaverment, la legendaria formación de slam Dripping, y parte de proyectos de dark ambient como Reflecting Identities y Underwater Sleep Orchestra. Bajo este alias, ha publicado hasta la fecha 11 álbumes, todos para el sello Cryo Chamber de Simon Health (Atrium Carceri).

El sonido de este proyecto es sumamente cinematográfico y explora atmósferas y temas oscuros a través de drones, capas de texturas y guitarras de post-rock. El resultado es una experiencia evocadora, realzada por el uso narrativo de algunas partes narradas.

Lost Within Loss es el undécimo álbum de God Body Disconnect, un trabajo profundamente marcado por el concepto de la pérdida y el arrepentimiento, y por la idea de buscar consuelo en los sueños, donde podemos reencontrarnos con lo que ha dejado de formar parte de la vida real.

Para dar forma a esta idea, emplea un equipamiento vintage, utilizando tres grabadoras de cassette de los años 80 y 90, y un reproductor de VHS. De este modo, fusiona sonidos cálidos y melancólicos, en un mundo sonoro donde la tristeza y la búsqueda de alivio coexisten como una paradoja.

The Life I Took For Granted inicia el álbum con su atmósfera inquietante y sus notas de piano melancólicas, conjurando un paisaje sonoro agridulce entremezclado con sonidos vibrantes y samples de la vida cotidiana, así como de películas. El resultado es una experiencia narrativa que continúa con Departed Moments Of Home, una pieza serena formada por drones celestiales y el sonido de la lluvia; un motivo en bucle nos guía a través de un mundo interior definido por la memoria y las emociones.

The Angel With Charred Wings nos ofrece una plantilla cinematográfica caracterizada por un lento crescendo, una capa de sonidos que se mantienen distantes y remotos, como ecos y recuerdos fantasmales. Una vez más, las atmósferas sombrías y las melodías oníricas se funden en la música, así como en la mente del oyente. A Life Time Of Letters Lost es un motivo serpenteante que emplea notas obsesivas y sonidos ominosos para lograr una comunión de diferentes sentimientos, fusionados en una sola entidad.

Would It Have Mattered es un episodio pesado que juega con paisajes sonoros minimalistas y aproximaciones placenteras a la música ambient, un breve remake resaltado por voces inquietantes que se mueven tras el tema musical principal. Y la última canción, Destined To Disappear, termina nuestro viaje con drones celestiales y tristes orquestaciones que trasportan perfectamente una sensación de pérdida y duelo, ofreciendo un clímax temático en sintonía con el conjunto de la obra.

Lost Within Loss es un trabajo muy personal, aunque agraciado con el don de ser comprensible gracias a sus temas humanos y realistas. El oyente se encontrará inmerso en un mundo nebuloso y onírico, lleno de vibraciones nostálgicas y melodías agridulces, elaborado con elementos minimalistas y dispersos y motivos con drones de cualidades evocadoras y narrativas. El artista no pretende asustar o alterar al oyente, sino abrirse y mostrar su dolor interior y sus recuerdos a través de la evocación de sensaciones, arrepentimientos y sentimientos personales. El resultado no es agobiante o sofocante; el álbum nos sitúa en el lugar del autor y experimentamos lo que él ha perdido, sabiendo que nunca volverá, o mejor dicho, los recuerdos fantasmales de lo que ha perdido, teñidos de nostalgia.
