The SPKtR – The Last of Men

It is always heartening to discover that projects we once admired still have the capacity to surprise us. We have already spoken with Graeme Revell about the return of SPK under its updated and renamed guise, The SPKtR. In fact, Industrial Complexx will shortly be publishing the first volume of a new fanzine in which we have dedicated a feature to The SPKtR, with an article in which Revell unpacks the nature of this new endeavour.

Nearly forty years after SPK’s final tour, Graeme Revell returns with The SPKtR, a new incarnation of the legendary New Zealand industrial group, presenting themselves with The Last of Men. What this first release proposes is a continuity with SPK’s original spirit, preserving the confrontation, sonic extremity and cultural provocation, and transposing it all into this new era, where anxiety is no longer rooted so much in explicit political violence as in the increasingly unsettling relationship between humanity and artificial intelligence. The track carries that tension in its very title, developing it through a production that fuses ritual electronics, guitars and a cinematic brutality that inevitably calls to mind Revell’s work on some of his most celebrated film scores.

The addition of Robert J. Revell, Graeme’s son, is a generational gamble that pays off. There is something in The SPKtR’s sound that belongs unmistakably to the hardest industrial tradition, yet also something that looks forward without nostalgia. The audiovisual experimentation of the accompanying video reinforces that sense of a project firmly rooted in the present. A return that will not disappoint those familiar with SPK’s legacy, and a powerful enough entry point for new audiences.

Siempre nos resulta reconfortante descubrir que proyectos a los que admiramos en su día puedan seguir todavía sorprendiéndonos. En su día ya hablamos con Graeme Revell sobre el regreso de SPK con su proyecto actualizado y renombrado como The SPKtR. De hecho, en breve desde Industrial Complexx tenemos previsto publicar el primer volumen de un nuevo fanzine en el que le hemos dedicado un espacio a The SPKtR con un artículo en el que desgrana la naturaleza de esta nueva propuesta.

Casi cuarenta años después de la gira final de SPK, Graeme Revell regresa con The SPKtR, nueva encarnación del legendario grupo industrial neozelandés, el cual se presenta con The Last of Men. Lo que propone este primer lanzamiento es una continuidad con el espíritu original de SPK, respetando la confrontación, la extremidad sonora y la provocación cultural, y todo trasladado a esta nueva era, donde la ansiedad ya no viene tanto de la violencia política explícita como de la relación cada vez más perturbadora entre lo humano y la inteligencia artificial. El tema lleva esa tensión en su propio título, y la desarrolla con una producción que fusiona electrónica ritual, guitarras y una brutalidad de corte cinematográfico que remite inevitablemente al trabajo de Revell en algunas de sus bandas sonoras.

La incorporación de Robert J. Revell, hijo de Graeme, es una apuesta generacional que funciona. Hay en el sonido de The SPKtR algo que pertenece claramente a la tradición industrial más dura, pero también algo que mira hacia adelante sin nostalgia. La experimentación audiovisual del videoclip refuerza esa sensación de proyecto pensado para el presente. Un regreso que no defrauda a quienes conocen el legado de SPK, y una puerta de entrada suficientemente poderosa para el nuevo público.
