Sally Dige – Holding The Sun [Dige Records]

More than seven years after her last album Holding On, Sally Dige returns with the new output Holding The Sun, an 8-track full-length collecting previous singles from the last five years, plus new tracks.

A Berlin-based Canadian artist, Sally is a multi-instrumentalist musician with a DIY approach to the composition and production of her music, which has been informed over the years by new wave, italo-disco, post-punk and ethereal pop.

Holding The Sun is not just another album in her discography, it’s quite clear while listening to it that it works as a «response» to her previous release (starting from the title), and as a personal and sonic re-evaluation of her aesthetics and artistic vision – less robotic in sound and execution (while not forfeiting some synth sounds and electro-pop elements) and less theatrical.

That’s not to say this is a 360° turn: many of the elements that are the backbone of the album have always been part of Sally’s music – the ethereal atmospheres, the sense of sweet melancholy, the retro elements. But, if in the past there was, almost always, an underlining dramatic, algid, and dark undercurrent, now we find a more delicate, direct, and openly emotional approach in which folk music, strings and acoustic instruments take a major role.

The first track It’s You I’m Thinking Of is a perfect case for this new style: sweet melodies, natural, soulful vocals, acoustic guitars, the lyrics about lost love: everything gives us a sense of unfiltered emotion and unashamed expression of feelings. Voice Of My Heart introduces delicate piano sounds and neo-classical elements mixed with ethereal declarations of self-reliance, while Sow The Path evokes the 4AD sound via dream-pop leanings and subtle 80’s motifs.

Strength In Me is closer to the dark-pop pastiches of the past, but still we have here an open-hearted, calm, reassuring outlook on emotional pain and loneliness typical of the album, I Will Be The Sun For You is a perfect blending of 80’s art-rock and Sally’s taste for orchestral songwriting, in the form of a no-nonsense love song full of gratitude, and You returns to bare melodies, subtle movements and acoustic sounds, while following suit thematically with the previous track.

The last two pieces of the album are the string version of Sow The Path – an emotional and slow-paced, ethereal take that would have delighted David Lynch, enriched by a captivating orchestral crescendo in its second half – and the instrumental pastiche Our Secrets, a melancholic acoustic mantra.

Holding The Sun sounds as a sincere musical and artistic expression by an artist that has grown up, as a person too, in the intervening years after her last effort, and has learned to follow just her own expectations. There are no masks here, any fragility is not hidden. The minimal and naked style of the music resonates with a sincere expression of one’s feelings, needs, and humanity. Overall, this is probably Sally Dige’s most mature and focused work to date, an album in which she doesn’t try to be something or portray a role, she just is herself. And it works perfectly fine.

Más de siete años después de su último álbum Holding On, Sally Dige regresa con Holding The Sun, un trabajo de 8 canciones que recopila singles de los últimos cinco años junto a nuevos temas.

Artista canadiense afincada en Berlín, Sally es una música multinstrumentista con un enfoque DIY en la composición y producción de su obra, influenciada por el new wave, el italo-disco, el post-punk y el ethereal pop.

Holding The Sun no es simplemente otro álbum en su discografía. Al escucharlo, queda claro que funciona como una «respuesta» a su trabajo anterior (empezando por el título) y como una reevaluación personal y sonora de su estética y visión artística: menos robótica en sonido y ejecución (aunque sin abandonar por completo los sintetizadores y elementos del electro-pop) y menos teatral.

Esto no significa un giro de 360°: muchos de los elementos que sostienen el álbum siempre han estado presentes en la música de Sally – las atmósferas etéreas, la dulce melancolía, los toques retro. Pero, si en el pasado había casi siempre una corriente dramática, gélida y oscura, ahora encontramos un enfoque más delicado, directo y abiertamente emocional, donde el folk, las cuerdas y los instrumentos acústicos cobran protagonismo.

La primera canción, It’s You I’m Thinking Of, es un ejemplo perfecto de este nuevo estilo: melodías dulces, vocales naturales y emotivas, guitarras acústicas y letras sobre el amor perdido. Todo transmite una emoción sin filtros y una expresión desinhibida de los sentimientos. Voice Of My Heart introduce delicados pianos y elementos neoclásicos mezclados con declaraciones etéreas de autosuficiencia, mientras que Sow The Path evoca el sonido del sello 4AD con influencias dream-pop y sutiles motivos ochenteros.

Strength In Me se acerca más a los remakes dark-pop del pasado, pero mantiene una mirada serena y reconfortante sobre el dolor emocional y la soledad, típica del álbum. I Will Be The Sun For You fusiona el art-rock de los 80 con el gusto de Sally por las composiciones orquestales, en forma de una honesta canción de amor llena de gratitud. You regresa a melodías desnudas, movimientos sutiles y sonidos acústicos, continuando la línea temática del tema anterior.

Los dos últimos temas del álbum son la versión orquestal de Sow The Path – una reinterpretación emocional y pausada que hubiera encantado a David Lynch, enriquecida por un crescendo orquestal en su segunda mitad, y el remake instrumental Our Secrets, un mantra acústico melancólico.

Holding The Sun suena como una expresión musical y artística sincera de una artista que ha madurado, también como persona, en estos años desde su último trabajo, aprendiendo a seguir solo sus propias expectativas. Aquí no hay máscaras, ninguna fragilidad se esconde. El estilo minimalista y desnudo de la música resuena con una expresión honesta de sentimientos, necesidades y humanidad. En definitiva, este es probablemente el trabajo más maduro y enfocado de Sally Dige hasta la fecha, un álbum en el que no intenta ser algo ni interpretar un papel, simplemente es ella misma. Y funciona a la perfección.
