The Ultimate Dreamers – Kids Alone [Alfa Matrix]

The Ultimate Dreamers launch a new phase of their conceptual universe Paradoxical Sleep with the EP «Kids Alone.» This work, consisting of six tracks, serves as a sonic exploration of the contradictions of youth, navigating between carefree euphoria, existential angst, and a shadow-tinged romanticism.

The core of the EP is the single version of the titular track, «Kids Alone,» specifically re-recorded for this release. Here, the band adopts a vigorous electropunk approach with clear influences from Neue Deutsche Welle, creating a chaotic anthem that captures the spirit of a Project X-style overflowing party. A clever nod to Pink Floyd also filters through, resulting in a unique blend that evokes the frenetic energy of John Maus and the charisma of Falco.

The journey continues with «Spiritchaser,» presented in an extended and remastered version. Here, the tone shifts towards a cold, introspective new wave, with atmospheres that pay homage to the depth of Depeche Mode and the melancholic lyricism of Clan of Xymox. This inner voyage culminates in the abyss of «Deafness,» a powerful gothic and post-punk ballad reminiscent of the dramatic intensity of Paradise Lost and Christian Death.

The EP’s universe expands through three exceptional remixes that reinterpret its essence. Aux Animaux imbues «Kids Alone» with unsettling darkwave tension; Mängelexemplar deconstructs «Spiritchaser» to rebuild it as an industrial, mechanical vision; and Kinex Kinex, in direct collaboration with the band, transforms «Wegvliegen» into a poignant piece of dark-folk.

The meticulous production, mixing, and mastering work by Len Lemeire endows the collection with striking clarity and power. The lyrics, enriched by verses from Kelly O’Hara, add layers of raw poetry. As a finale, the accompanying music video for the single, creatively inspired by the classic Betty Boop cartoon «Baby Be Good» (1935), perfectly reflects the playful, nostalgic, and surrealist spirit that permeates the entire work.
