downGate – Nostis [Apport!]

Some records arrive as the result of meticulous planning; others are born from the moment itself, from a chance encounter. Nostis belongs unequivocally to the second category, and it is precisely for this reason that it proves so fascinating.

Behind downGate stand two essential names from the Baltic industrial and experimental scene: Oorchach, the alias of Lithuanian artist Povilas Vaitkevičius, a legendary figure and the driving force behind the Apport! label, and Bob Data, the artistic name of Latvian musician Aleksandrs Oļģerts Bēŗziņš, founding member of IRKLIS (formerly Audioscope) and a key reference point in the Riga electronic scene.

The result is an EP that veers into sonic territories that are difficult to categorize yet effortlessly seductive, with a dense and charged atmosphere. Baltic industrialism, with its heritage of architectural coldness and restrained tension, permeates every sonic decision. There is neither the brutality of power electronics here nor the rigidity of more conventional EBM. downGate proposes an electronic music that threatens to explode yet prefers to hold itself at the threshold of intensity. Nostis, a word meaning «night» in ancient Baltic Prussian, marks a collaborative debut that suggests depth, a coherent artistic vision, and, above all, a distinct sonic language of its own.

Hay discos que llegan como consecuencia de una planificación meticulosa, y hay discos que nacen del instante, del encuentro fortuito. Nostis pertenece inequívocamente a la segunda categoría, y precisamente por eso resulta tan fascinante.

Detrás de downGate se encuentran dos nombres imprescindibles de la escena industrial y experimental báltica como son Oorchach, alias del lituano Povilas Vaitkevičius, figura legendaria y alma del sello Apport!, y Bob Data, nombre artístico del letón Aleksandrs Oļģerts Bēŗziņš, miembro fundador de IRKLIS (anteriormente Audioscope) y referente de la escena electrónica de Riga.

El resultado es un EP que vira hacia territorios sonoros de difícil clasificación pero fácil seducción, con una atmósfera densa y eléctrica. El industrialismo báltico, con su herencia de frialdad arquitectónica y tensión contenida, está presente en cada decisión sonora. No hay aquí la brutalidad del power electronics ni la rigidez del EBM más convencional. downGate propone una electrónica que amenaza con estallar pero que prefiere mantenerse en el umbral de la intensidad. Nostis, palabra que significa noche en antiguo prusiano báltico, es un debut colaborativo que sugiere profundidad, coherencia de visión y, sobre todo, un lenguaje sonoro propio.
