Bell Barrow – Saltire [Saccharine Underground]

We previously discussed the debut of Bell Barrow, the solo project of Jeremy Moore, head of the Saccharine Underground label. Now, just under a year later, Jeremy returns with a new installment, a new album that follows his first release, CoreCore Pulp. Bell Barrow returns with a work of great conceptual depth. Saltire is a deliberate and meditated leap into the void, a 70-plus-minute immersion into the murky waters of generational curses, free will, and the human psyche fractured by cyclical patterns of pain.

Bell Barrow conceives Saltire as a temporal panorama. The album functions as a distorted lens through which to observe the recurring threads of violence, abuse, and addiction that weave through the fabric of many family lines. Musically, the album represents a significant evolution and expansion for the artist. If CoreCore Pulp was an outburst of primordial fury, here Bell Barrow weaves a complex sonic narrative. It retains the abrasive texture of its predecessor but frames it within a much vaster, more contemplative landscape.

The composition method, free improvisation, is key to understanding the album’s visceral authenticity. Here, there are no cold calculations, it is about the organic and raw expression of a concept. As Moore explains, the main challenge was to convey this dense message without resorting to vocals or lyrics. The language is purely instrumental, built upon dense atmospheres in which he manages to create a tension that finds release in a strange beauty of harmonic decay.

Ahora, algo menos de un año después, Jeremy regresa con una nueva entrega, con un nuevo álbum que continúa a su primer lanzamiento CoreCore Pulp. Bell Barrow regresa con una obra de gran profundidad conceptual. Saltire es un salto al vacío deliberado y meditado, una inmersión de más de 70 minutos en las turbias aguas de las maldiciones generacionales, el libre albedrío y la psique humana fracturada por patrones cíclicos de dolor.

Bell Barrow concibe Saltire como una panorámica temporal. El álbum funciona como un lente distorsionado a través del cual observar los hilos conductores de violencia, abuso y adicción que tejen la trama de muchas genealogías. Musicalmente, el álbum representa una gran evolución y expansión del artista. Si CoreCore Pulp era un estallido de furia primordial, aquí Bell Barrow teje una narrativa sonora compleja. Conserva la textura abrasiva de su predecesor, pero la enmarca dentro de un paisaje mucho más vasto y contemplativo.

El método de composición, improvisación libre, es clave para entender la autenticidad visceral del disco. Aquí no hay cáculos fríos, se trata de la expresión orgánica y cruda de un concepto. Como explica Moore, el principal reto era transmitir este denso mensaje sin recurrir a voz ni letras. El lenguaje es puramente instrumental, con atmósferas densas en las que logra crear una tensión que encuentra la liberación en una extraña belleza de degradación armónica.
