Statiqbloom – The Casket Nest [Hands Productions]

Fade Kainer’s brainchild Statiqbloom returns with a 7-track release called The Casket Nest, published by HANDS. This new output comes after a period of deep experimentation and research for the American artist, who relocated in Berlin some years ago, a period exemplified by self-releases like Bled From All Sides, Memory Remode, and Winter.

In a way, this period has shaped the further evolution in sound that we find in The Casket Basket. In the previously mentioned works, Kainer has offered both deep cuts, live versions, unreleased material from his recent discography, and a look back to post-industrial roots and harsher elements.

Now, the new album reaches territories close to 90s power noise and rhythmic noise, sometimes adapting them to contemporary dark techno templates, sometimes employing their purest form. Spectrum In The Thread Of A Spiders Web is an intro informed by mechanical, pounding rhythmic patterns and ominous ambiances – a crafty mix of dark atmosphere and obsessive elements, while A Knife From Above fully embraces militant post-industrial abrasiveness and monolithic soundscapes, offering a slow-paced assault.

Second Sight follows suite with its rhythmic noise mantra, upon which distorted shouts and grim basslines are placed, and Salt The Flowers looks back to the electro-industrial past of the project, integrating it with dark techno elements; the track is reprised later with an instrumental version where its percussive nature shines.

Into The Depths is an exercise in factory-like snares and droning movements informed by mid-90s industrial-techno, a crawling crescendo ready to perform destructive kicks, before imploding with a shrilling outro. Apparitions ends the journey with a final assault encapsulated by grinding sounds and stomping marches, an apt finale which climaxes with delirious energy.

The Casket Nest confirms and expands upon the ever-evolving state of Statiqbloom, a project that keeps redefining itself with each new release. It’s always interesting to see an American artist twisting and reconfiguring sonic tropes from German rhythmic noise and industrial-techno, adapting them to current times and his own aesthetics and sensibilities; surely the recent collaboration with Blush Response Folding In, and the series of auto-releases have influenced this latest development, but its seeds can be traced as far as Beneath The Whelm and Infinte Spectre, albeit in a different soundscape and contest. We will see where Kainer will go from there.

La obra maestra de Fade Kainer, Statiqbloom, regresa con un lanzamiento de 7 temas llamado The Casket Nest, publicado por HANDS. Esta nueva entrega llega tras un período de intensa experimentación e investigación del artista estadounidense, que se mudó a Berlín hace algunos años, un período ejemplificado por autolanzamientos como Bled From All Sides, Memory Remode y Winter.

En cierto modo, este período ha dado forma a la posterior evolución sonora que encontramos en The Casket Nest. En las obras mencionadas, Kainer ha ofrecido tanto cortes en profundidad, versiones en directo y material inédito de su discografía reciente, como una mirada retrospectiva a las raíces post-industriales y a los elementos más abrasivos.

Ahora, el nuevo álbum alcanza territorios cercanos al power noise y el rhythmic noise de los años 90, adaptándolos en ocasiones a las plantillas contemporáneas del dark techno, y empleándolos otras veces en su forma más pura. Spectrum In The Thread Of A Spiders Web es una intro marcada por patrones rítmicos mecánicos y contundentes y ambientes amenazantes, una hábil mezcla de dark ambient y elementos obsesivos, mientras que A Knife From Above abraza plenamente la aspereza militante del post-industrial y los paisajes sonoros monolíticos, ofreciendo un ataque de ritmo lento.

Second Sight sigue la misma línea con su mantra de rhythmic noise, sobre el que se superponen gritos distorsionados y líneas de bajo sombrías, y Salt The Flowers mira hacia el pasado electro-industrial del proyecto, integrándolo con elementos de dark techno; el tema se retoma más adelante en una versión instrumental en la que su naturaleza percusiva brilla con luz propia.

Into The Depths es un ejercicio de cajas de ritmos industriales y movimientos de drone continuo inspirados en el industrial-techno de mediados de los 90, un crescendo reptante listo para desplegar bombos destructivos, antes de implosionar con un outro estridente. Apparitions cierra el recorrido con un asalto final envuelto en sonidos chirriantes y marchas estrepitosas, un epílogo apropiado que culmina con una energía delirante.

The Casket Nest confirma y amplía el estado de constante evolución de Statiqbloom, un proyecto que no deja de redefinirse con cada nuevo lanzamiento. Siempre resulta interesante ver a un artista estadounidense torcer y reconfigurar los tropos sonoros del rhythmic noise alemán y el industrial-techno, adaptándolos a la actualidad y a su propia estética y sensibilidad. Sin duda, la reciente colaboración con Blush Response en Folding In y la serie de autolanzamientos han influido en este último desarrollo, aunque sus semillas pueden rastrearse hasta Beneath The Whelm e Infinite Spectre, si bien en un paisaje sonoro y un contexto distintos. Habrá que ver adónde irá Kainer a partir de aquí.
