Test Dept – Industrial Overture [Artoffact Records]

British industrial music pioneers Test Dept have announced the release of ‘Industrial Overture. Studio & Live Recordings 1982-1985’, the first in a series of box sets that will document their career. This comprehensive collection, available from December 5 via the Artoffact label, includes 42 tracks across 4 CDs, featuring 26 previously unreleased digital tracks and 12 completely unreleased recordings.

As a preview, a 1983 version of their track ‘State Of Affairs’, recorded for a John Peel session, has been released. The band recalls how spontaneity and experimentation defined those sessions, and how the song’s lyrics, which speak of «burning books,» regain an uncanny relevance today.

The box set unearths gems from their catalog that had been unavailable for decades, such as their cassette-only debut album ‘Strength Of Metal In Motion’ (1983) and the classics ‘Ecstasy Under Duress’ and ‘Atonal & Hamburg’. All material has been compiled by the band and remastered.

Formed in the 1980s, Test Dept is legendary for their powerful live performances and their sound built from industrial objects and scrap metal, always in the service of political and social protest. Following their resurgence in the 2010s, the group, now centered on its founders Paul Jamrozy and Gray Cunnington, revisits their legacy with these releases and also announces a new album for 2026 and a tour of Spain, Finland, and Sweden for late this year, promising their characteristic immersive and confrontational shows.

Studio & Live Recordings 1982-1985’, el primero de una serie de cajas recopilatorias que documentarán su carrera. Este exhaustivo set, disponible a partir del 5 de diciembre a través del sello Artoffact, incluye 42 temas en 4 CD, con 26 pistas inéditas en formato digital y 12 completamente inéditas.

Como adelanto, se ha publicado una versión de 1983 de su tema ‘State Of Affairs’, grabada para una sesión de John Peel. La banda recuerda cómo la espontaneidad y la experimentación definieron esas sesiones, y cómo la letra de la canción, que habla de «quemar libros», recupera una inquietante relevancia en la actualidad.

El box set rescata joyas de su catálogo que llevaban décadas desaparecidas, como su álbum debut sólo en casete ‘Strength Of Metal In Motion’ (1983) y los clásicos ‘Ecstasy Under Duress’ y ‘Atonal & Hamburg’. Todo el material ha sido compilado por la banda y remasterizado.
