The Ultimate Dreamers & Implant – Paradoxical Implants [Spleen+ / Alfa Matrix]

There are collaborations born of convenience and collaborations born of conviction. Paradoxical Implants clearly belongs to the second category. What began as a remix request between The Ultimate Dreamers and Len Lemeire, known in electronic music circles for his work at the helm of Implant, ultimately became a creative dialogue between two projects that have spent years sharing studio time, aesthetic sensibility, and a shared approach to music that orbits between emotional darkness and electronic rigour.

The starting point is Paradoxical Sleep, the acclaimed album by The Ultimate Dreamers, and the exercise at hand is to take six of its songs back to the workshop and rebuild them from within. This is not, therefore, a remix project in the more conventional sense of the term — those cosmetic interventions that alter the tempo or add layers without touching the architecture of the original. Lemeire deconstructs, dismantles and reassembles, and the result is an EP that can be read as a standalone work just as much as an extension of its predecessor.

The coexistence of the two sonic worlds that shape the record is the first thing that commands attention. The melancholic, enveloping post-punk of The Ultimate Dreamers confronts the surgical precision and rhythmic force of Implant, and the tension between these two identities is precisely what gives the EP its distinctive character.

Digging opens the EP from abrasive territory, with masterful control over a blend of sonic layers pushed to their limits and a fragmented yet driving rhythm. Kids Alone takes the opposite path, anchoring itself in a binary cadence with a direct and effective pulse that connects the band’s DNA to the more physical tradition of genres such as techno and EBM. Spiritchaser preserves the emotional spirit of the original track, though its harmonic luminosity intensifies its euphoria. Far Away opts for expansion, enriching the synthetic textures and deepening the emotional dimension of the piece. The version of Into The Fog is arguably Len Lemeire’s most personal contribution, as the intimate character of the original mutates into a more abstract and unsettling sonic form. Envoler, the closing track, is stripped of all superfluous ornamentation and draped in a cold-wave aura that, according to the band, makes no secret of invoking the timeless melancholy of Trimosie 21, though in this version, its sonic aesthetic is more solid and forceful than the original.

Hay colaboraciones que nacen de la comodidad y colaboraciones que nacen de la convicción. Paradoxical Implants pertenece claramente a la segunda categoría. Lo que comenzó como una petición de remezcla entre The Ultimate Dreamers y Len Lemeire, conocido en el circuito electrónico por su trabajo al frente de Implant, terminó convirtiéndose en un diálogo creativo entre dos proyectos que llevan años compartiendo estudio, criterio estético y una forma de entender la música que orbita entre la oscuridad emocional y el rigor electrónico.

El punto de partida es Paradoxical Sleep, el aclamado álbum de The Ultimate Dreamers, y el ejercicio propuesto es devolver seis de sus canciones al taller y reconstruirlas desde dentro. No se trata, por tanto, de remezclas en el sentido más convencional del término, con esas intervenciones cosméticas que alteran el tempo o añaden capas sin tocar la arquitectura del original. Lemeire deconstruye, desmonta y vuelve a ensamblar, y el resultado es un EP que puede leerse como una obra autónoma tanto como una extensión de su predecesora.

La convivencia de los dos universos sonoros que articulan el disco es lo primero que llama la atención. El post-punk melancólico y envolvente de The Ultimate Dreamers se enfrenta aquí a la precisión quirúrgica y la contundencia rítmica de Implant, y la tensión entre ambas identidades es precisamente lo que le da al EP su carácter particular.

Digging abre el EP desde un territorio abrasivo, con un gran control en una mezcla de líneas sonoras llevada al límite y con un ritmo fragmentado y contundente. Kids Alone toma el camino contrario y se ancla en una cadencia binaria, con un pulso directo y efectivo, que conecta el ADN de la banda con la tradición más física de géneros como el techno o el EBM. Spiritchaser mantiene el espíritu emocional de la pista original aunque su luminosidad armónica intensifica su euforia. Far Away opta por la expansión y enriquece las texturas sintéticas, profundizando así en la dimensión emocional del tema. La versión de Into The Fog es posiblemente la más personal de Len Lemeire, ya que el carácter íntimo de la versión original muta a un aspecto sonoro más abstracto e inquietante. Envoler, pista que cierra el lanzamiento, es despojada de todo ornamento superfluo y revestida de una aura cold-wave que según la banda invoca sin disimulo la melancolía atemporal de Trosomie 21, aunque en esta versión, su estética sonora es más solida y contundente que la pista original.
