Youth Code – Yours, With Malice [Sumerian Records]

Youth Code are an American duo dedicated to an aggressive, emotional and captivating mix of hardcore vocals and robust electro-industrial sounds.

Ryan George and Sara Taylor have been active under this moniker since 2012, and their career is characterized by a constant growth that can be heard in all of their outputs, but at the same time by a coherent and personal modus operandi that renders their music instantly recognizable.

From the minimal and chaotic beginnings of the self-titled album and the single Keep Falling Apart / Tiger’s Remorse, to the more organized and structured, but not less confronting and visceral, A Place To Stand and Commitment To Complications, and the more experimental collaboration with King Josef A Skeleton Key In The Doors Of Depression, Sara’s cathartic shouts and Ryan’s old-school synths assaults have always been the cornerstone of their identity and sound.

After a long hiatus due to COVID and some personal issues in their lives, they have returned with a 5-track EP called Yours, With Malice, another step in their evolution, and at the same time a new chapter in their evergoing canon. In just 17 minutes of length, they manage to redefine their sound and delivery, showcasing some new skills and tools.

Sara expands her vocal abilities, both in range and control, and Ryan shows an interest in modular sounds, syncopation and broken rhythms that are developed via complex microstructures. Of course, their industrial roots are not forgotten, but intermixed with these new elements, giving us a modern example of the genre.

No Consequence is a no-nonsense march with strong kicks and abrasive vocal refrains, probably the track with more elements in common with their previous efforts, but already characterized by some new sounds in the synth department. Wishing Well explores microrhythms as well as infectious motifs underlined by cutting basslines and dense atmospheres, while In Search Of Tomorrow fully embraces mutated melodies, IDM soundscapes, brokenbeats, and soulful assaults.

Make Sense is an exercise in mechanical rhythmic patterns and modern urban soundscapes, ready to explode in familiar rides underlined by witch-house suggestions. Everything works well, all the elements in tandem give us a cathartic crescendo with a bittersweet taste. The final track, I’m Sorry, translates the early sound of Youth Code into a cyberpunk version with captivating distortions and enthralling synth melodies.

Yours, With Malice is in many ways a new beginning, and at the same time a continuation, for the duo. Finding new interest and energy, they manage to stay coherent without aping themselves, expanding their sonic palette and offering some new takes on their frantic brand of electro-industrial music. In a time when many projects find themselves stuck in an endless repetition of the past, it is refreshing to see such an approach. Now, we can only hope to hear a full length soon, that will further expand what has been established here.

Youth Code es un dúo estadounidense que ofrece una mezcla agresiva, emocional y cautivadora de voces hardcore y sonidos robustos de electro-industrial.

Ryan George y Sara Taylor llevan activos bajo este nombre desde 2012. Su trayectoria se define por un crecimiento constante, audible en cada uno de sus trabajos, pero también por una forma de trabajar coherente y personal que hace que su música sea instantánemanete reconocible.

Desde los inicios caóticos y minimalistas de su álbum homónimo y el sencillo Keep Falling Apart / Tiger’s Remorse, pasando por los discos más organizados y estructurados, aunque igual de confrontativos y viscerales, como A Place To Stand y Commitment To Complications, hasta la colaboración más experimental con King Josef, A Skeleton Key In The Doors Of Depression, los gritos catárticos de Sara y los arrolladores sintetizadores de inspiración old-school de Ryan siempre han sido el pilar fundamental de su identidad y su sonido.

Tras un largo paréntesis debido a la COVID y a algunos problemas personales, han regresado con un EP de 5 pistas titulado Yours, With Malice, un paso más en su evolución y, a la vez, un nuevo capítulo en su canon en constante desarrollo. En apenas 17 minutos, consiguen redefinir su sonido y su puesta en escena, demostrando nuevas habilidades y recursos.

Sara expande sus capacidades vocales, tanto en rango como en control, mientras que Ryan explora sonidos modulares y los ritmos rotos sincopados desarrollados mediante microestructuras complejas. Por supuesto, no olvidan sus raíces industriales, sino que las combinan con estos nuevos elementos, ofreciendo un ejemplo moderno del género.

No Consequence es una pieza contundente y directa, con golpes potentes y estribillos vocales abrasadores. Es probablemente el tema que más elementos comparte con sus trabajos anteriores, aunque ya introduce sonidos novedosos en la sección de sintetizadores. Wishing Well se adentra en los microrritmos y los motivos musicales pegadizos, resaltados por bajos cortantes y atmósferas densas y opresivas. Por su parte, In Search Of Tomorrow adopta por completo melodías mutantes, paisajes sonoros propios del IDM, ritmos brokenbeat y ataques con alma.

Make Sense es un ejercicio en patrones rítmicos mecánicos y sonidos urbanos modernos, a punto de estallar en pasajes reconocibles con toques de witch-house. Todo funciona a la perfección; los elementos, en conjunto, crean un crescendo catártico con un sabor agridulce. La pista final, I’m Sorry, traslada el sonido primigenio de Youth Code a una versión cyberpunk, con distorsiones cautivadoras y melodías de sintetizador que hechizan.

Yours, With Malice es, en muchos aspectos, un nuevo comienzo y, a la vez, una continuación para el dúo. Al encontrar nuevos intereses y energía, logran mantenerse fieles a sí mismos sin caer en la ironía, expandiendo su paleta sonora para ofrecer nuevas perspectivas sobre su frenética marca de música electro-industrial. En una época en la que muchos proyectos parecen estancados en una repetición infinita del pasado, resulta refrescante encontrarse con una propuesta así. Ahora solo cabe esperar que pronto llegue un álbum de larga duración que amplíe aún más lo aquí establecido.
